What siding work actually involves

Greater Charlotte Contracting installs, repairs, and replaces residential siding throughout the Greater Charlotte metro. If your exterior is showing rot, impact damage, fading, or just hasn't held up the way it should, siding replacement is one of the highest-return upgrades you can make to a home. Clint has handled siding as part of full exterior renovations and as a standalone replacement project, and he'll tell you straight which option makes sense for your house before any work starts. Call (704) 957-5323 to set up a look.

The cost of a siding project depends on a handful of things: total square footage, the material you choose, what's underneath (rotted sheathing adds scope), how many penetrations and trim details need custom work, and whether the job is a partial replacement or a full tear-off. Vinyl siding sits at the lower end of the material range and holds up well in the heat and humidity the Southeast throws at it every summer. Fiber cement, including Hardie board, costs more upfront but it won't warp, rot, or get eaten by insects, which matters a lot in areas with older tree canopy and damp soil. Engineered wood siding is a middle option some homeowners prefer for the look. Every job is different, contact Greater Charlotte Contracting for an accurate estimate.

Material Options

Siding materials that hold up in this climate hold up

The right material depends on your budget, your home's existing structure, and how long you want to go before touching it again.

Vinyl Siding

The most common residential choice for a reason. It's affordable, low-maintenance, and doesn't need painting. Modern profiles have improved significantly. It can crack in very hard impacts and doesn't insulate quite like fiber cement, but for most homes it's a solid call.

fiber cement hardie board work, professional service in Charlotte, NC

Fiber Cement (Hardie Board)

Fiber cement siding is made from cement, sand, and cellulose fibers pressed together. It won't rot, it's fire-resistant, and it holds paint far longer than wood. Hardie board is the most common brand name. It's heavier and costs more to install, but the durability justifies it for most exterior renovations.

engineered wood siding work, professional service in Charlotte, NC

Engineered Wood Siding

Looks like natural wood without the maintenance demands. Engineered wood is treated to resist moisture and insects, and it's lighter than fiber cement. A good middle-ground option when you want the aesthetic of wood siding but aren't ready to repaint every few years.

Trim and Soffit Work

Siding never exists in isolation. Fascia, soffit, corner trim, and window wraps have to be addressed at the same time or the finished job looks half-done. A complete exterior repairs scope accounts for all of it, not just the field panels.

Our Process

How a siding project runs from start to finish

Most homeowners haven't had a siding project done before and don't know what to expect. Here's how it actually goes.

  1. 01

    Inspection and scope

Clint walks the exterior and looks at what's there: condition of the current siding, what's behind it, any rot or moisture damage in the sheathing, trim condition, and how the penetrations (vents, outlets, fixtures) are handled. The estimate reflects what he actually finds, not a generic square-footage guess.

  2. 02

    Tear-off and prep

Old siding comes off. Sheathing gets inspected and repaired where it's compromised. House wrap or moisture barrier goes on before a single panel is installed. Skipping or cheaping out on this step is how water gets behind new siding within two years. We don't skip it.

  3. 03

    Installation and detail work

Panels go up, starter strips are set level, and the detail work around windows, doors, corners, and vents gets done to a finished standard. The last 10% of a siding job, the trim and custom bends, is where most of the visible quality lives. That's where extra time gets spent.

Honest Scope

Signs your siding needs more than a patch

  1. 01

    Widespread rot or soft spots

One soft area might be a localized moisture entry point. Soft spots in multiple locations, especially around windows and at the base of walls, usually mean the sheathing underneath is compromised and patching the surface doesn't solve what's underneath.

  2. 02

    Bubbling, warping, or chronic fading

Bubbling under the surface means moisture is already trapped. Warped panels won't lie flat again. Severe fading isn't just cosmetic. It means the material has degraded to the point where it's no longer doing its job as a weather barrier.

  3. 03

High energy bills without an obvious cause

Failed siding that's allowed air infiltration behind the walls affects your HVAC load. If your bills have climbed without a clear reason, the exterior envelope is worth investigating before you look at windows or insulation.

  4. 04

Visible gaps at seams or around trim

Gaps are where water enters. A gap at a window trim corner or a seam that's pulled open is an active leak path. In older homes throughout neighborhoods like Mint Hill and Huntersville, siding that's twenty-plus years old often shows this at multiple points simultaneously.

Clint did such a great job helping us replace some outdoor vent covers. We had a basket style vent cover that had cracked and birds had nested inside. We had previously tried other handymen that would say they would come out and never showed because it was a small job. Clint came out very quickly, in the rain, and made it so much more efficient and esthetically pleasing. He was very affordable and professional. Clint is the MAN! He will now be our go to guy for other projects. I highly recommend him!

So, I just wanted to first of all thank Liz for the great referral to get my home project done. I was a bit nervous however after meeting Clinton, I can’t thank him and his team enough for the job well done to my satisfaction. Clinton listened to what I wanted and delivered just that. Clinton not only listened also very professional and knowledgeable. He gave me a step by step timeline and actually stuck to it. That’s very rare to find in a contractor however his team was awesome and went above and beyond my expectations with the attention to detail. So my rating is really a 10/10. I had a simple garage make over.

Had a great experience working with Clint and Greater Charlotte Contracting. He did great work in a reasonable amount of time and for a reasonable price. I have had a few home projects I’ve needed to complete within the last few months and he has not only provided me great service with these projects, but also has had great referrals for work outside of his scope of business. Siding as part of a full exterior renovation

New siding often uncovers adjacent work that's easier to address at the same time than to schedule separately.

Most homes that need new siding also have related work that's overdue. The gutters may be pulling away from the fascia. The exterior paint is failing where the old siding was letting moisture through. Window trim needs recapping. In some cases, decks or porch attachments have caused moisture entry at the wall behind them. Handling siding as part of a broader exterior scope rather than in isolation means you're not calling a second contractor six months later to deal with what got missed. Clint handles all of it, and the estimate will be scoped to show exactly what's included so there's no ambiguity about what gets done. In neighborhoods like Pineville and Matthews, older homes often have a mix of materials on the exterior, original wood siding in some sections, vinyl added later on others, and trim that's been patched more than once. A complete exterior evaluation is worth doing before deciding how much of the surface to replace. Every job is different, contact Greater Charlotte Contracting for an accurate estimate.

What this business won't do on a siding job

Twenty-plus years in the field means knowing exactly where corners get cut and refusing to cut them.

  • No siding over moisture damage

Installing new panels over rotted sheathing hides the problem for a year or two. It doesn't fix it. If there's rot underneath, it gets addressed before anything else goes on.

  • No vague estimates

Robert Persinger's review mentions a neatly itemized, perfectly detailed estimate. That's the standard. A single-line number with no breakdown is how surprises get buried.

  • No subcontractor runaround

When work needs to be redone, it gets redone. The accountability stays with Clint, not passed to whoever is on site that day.

  • No pressure toward a full replacement you don't need

If a targeted repair is the honest answer, that's what you'll hear. The goal is to tell you what your house actually needs, not to maximize the invoice.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between composite siding and Hardie board fiber cement siding?
Composite siding is typically made from a mix of wood fibers and resins, while Hardie board fiber cement is made from cement, sand, and cellulose pressed together. Fiber cement is denser, heavier, and more resistant to fire and insects. Composite is lighter and easier to work with but tends to have a shorter lifespan in high-humidity climates. For most homes in the Greater Charlotte region, fiber cement is the longer-term call.
What is fiber cement siding made of, and why does it hold up better than wood?
Fiber cement is made from Portland cement, ground sand, and cellulose fibers. The cement matrix makes it dimensionally stable, meaning it doesn't swell and contract with moisture the way wood does. It won't rot, won't attract insects, and holds paint significantly longer than natural wood. The tradeoff is weight and installation cost. It's heavier to handle and requires specific fasteners and cutting technique to do it right.
Can new siding be installed directly over old siding, or does the old material have to come off first?
It depends on what's underneath and what's going on. Installing over existing siding can work in limited situations, but it traps any existing moisture problems and adds wall thickness that can create issues at windows and trim. Honestly, tear-off is almost always the better approach. It lets you inspect and repair the sheathing, install a proper moisture barrier, and get a finished result that will last. Covering up problems isn't a strategy.
How long does a full siding replacement typically take on an average-sized home?
For most single-story or two-story homes in the 1,500 to 2,500 square foot range, a full exterior siding replacement runs several days to a week depending on material, how much prep work the sheathing requires, and the complexity of the trim details. Homes with a lot of gable peaks, dormers, or irregular angles take longer. Clint scopes timeline as part of the estimate so you know what to expect before work starts.
Does siding replacement require a building permit in North Carolina?
In most NC jurisdictions, a like-for-like siding replacement doesn't require a permit. However, if structural repairs to the sheathing are involved, or if the scope includes changes to the exterior envelope beyond the surface material, local requirements vary. Greater Charlotte Contracting is licensed in NC and will let you know during the estimate whether your specific project needs a permit pulled before work starts.
How do I know if my siding has moisture damage behind it before I can see rot on the surface?
Surface siding often looks fine while the sheathing behind it has been absorbing moisture for months or years. Warning signs include soft spots when you press firmly on the panel, paint that's bubbling from the inside out rather than from UV exposure, interior walls that feel cold in spots that shouldn't be, and visible mold or mildew appearing at the base of the wall near grade. A proper inspection involves checking at penetration points, seams, and anywhere trim has pulled away from the surface.
