What Bathroom Renovation Contractors Actually Do

Looking for a bathroom remodel in Charlotte, NC? Greater Charlotte Contracting handles bathroom renovations of every scale across the metro, from single-fixture tub replacement to full gut-and-rebuild projects. Clint has 20-plus years of hands-on construction experience, and he's the one on your job site, not a crew you've never met. He scopes the job straight, explains what it costs before any number gets written down, and finishes what he starts. Call (704) 957-5323 to talk through what your bathroom actually needs.

Charlotte housing stock shapes a lot of these projects. The older bungalows and foursquares in Dilworth and Plaza Midwood, many built before 1980, commonly hide galvanized supply lines, cast iron drains, and original subfloors that have taken decades of moisture. What looks like a cosmetic retile often turns into substrate work once the old tile comes off. Charlotte Water draws from the Catawba River and the Mountain Island reservoir, so the supply here runs moderately hard, and that mineral content is what scales up older shower valves and leaves the deposits you see on glass and fixtures. We account for all of it in the scope.

A bathroom remodel can mean a lot of things, and the scope determines everything. Replacing a tub surround, swapping out a vanity, retiling a shower, or completely reconfiguring the layout each carry their own sequence of work and their own timeline. What drives cost is size of the space, condition of the existing plumbing and subfloor, the materials you choose, and how much of the original layout stays intact. A cosmetic refresh on a functional bathroom is a different job than opening walls to move drain lines, which is also where permitting comes in: Mecklenburg County Code Enforcement requires a permit once plumbing gets relocated or walls move, and Clint flags that during the walk-through so nothing stalls the job later. Every job is different, so contact Greater Charlotte Contracting for an accurate estimate.

Scope of Work

Bathroom Work We Handle Handle

One contractor covers the full sequence, so nothing falls through the cracks between trades.

Tub and Shower Replacement

Full removal and installation of new tubs, shower pans, and surround systems. We handle the demo, prep, and finish work. If the subfloor underneath has softened from years of water intrusion, that gets addressed before anything new goes in.

Tile Work

Shower walls, tub surrounds, and floor tile installed correctly from the substrate up. Tile only looks good for years when the backing is set right. We don't skip that step.

Vanity and Fixture Replacement

Vanity swaps, mirror installation, light bar replacement, and plumbing fixture upgrades. Smaller in scope, but we do these as part of a larger remodel or on their own.

Half Bath to Full Bath Conversion

Adding a shower or tub to an existing half bath requires opening walls and relocating or extending drain lines. It's a real project, not a quick swap. Clint has done this work and will tell you upfront what it involves.

Drywall and Waterproofing

Bathrooms fail at the waterproofing layer, not the surface. Cement board, moisture-resistant drywall, and proper sealing behind the tile are what keep a bathroom remodel from becoming a water damage call two years later.

Flooring

Tile, luxury vinyl plank, or sheet goods in bathroom-appropriate materials. We coordinate flooring with the rest of the remodel so the sequencing is right and nothing has to be redone.

Our Process

How a Bathroom Remodel Gets Done Right

  1. 01

    Walk-Through and Honest Scope

Clint looks at the bathroom in person, checks what's behind the walls if needed, and gives you an itemized estimate that reflects what the job actually requires. No padding, no guesswork presented as certainty.

  2. 02

    Demo and Substrate Prep

Old materials come out, the subfloor and wall substrate get inspected, and anything compromised gets fixed before new work goes on top of it. Skipping this step is how remodels fail early.

  3. 03

    Installation and Finish

Tile, fixtures, vanity, and trim installed in the right sequence. Clint is on-site through the finish work, not managing from a distance. The job isn't done until cleanup is done.

Why It Matters

Do You Need a General Contractor for a Bathroom Remodel?

Short answer: it depends on how much is actually changing. Swapping a light fixture or a toilet seat is a DIY job. Replacing a tub, moving a drain, retiling a shower, or converting a half bath to a full bath, those are projects where cutting corners on sequencing or waterproofing creates real damage down the road. A general contractor coordinates the scope, manages the sequence, and takes responsibility for the whole result. With Greater Charlotte Contracting, that's one person doing most of the work, not five different subcontractors you have to track separately. Liz Zimmerman put it plainly in her review: "Communication is very important in things like these and he is nothing short of amazing with his communication and professionalism." That's the standard Clint holds every job to. The business carries 17 five-star Google reviews, and the pattern across all of them is the same: the estimate was accurate, the work got done on time, and the scope was explained clearly before a dollar was spent.

What Homeowners Say

5.017 verified Google reviews
Clint did such a great job helping us replace some outdoor vent covers. We had a basket style vent cover that had cracked and birds had nested inside. We had previously tried other handymen that would say they would come out and never showed because it was a small job. Clint came out very quickly, in the rain, and made it so much more efficient and esthetically pleasing. He was very affordable and professional. Clint is the MAN! He will now be our go to guy for other projects. I highly recommend him!

So, I just wanted to first of all thank Liz for the great referral to get my home project done. I was a bit nervous however after meeting Clinton, I can’t thank him and his team enough for the job well done to my satisfaction. Clinton listened to what I wanted and delivered just that. Clinton not only listened also very professional and knowledgeable. He gave me a step by step timeline and actually stuck to it. That’s very rare to find in a contractor however his team was awesome and went above and beyond my expectations with the attention to detail. So my rating is really a 10/10. I had a simple garage make over.

Let. Me . Tell . You . Something . Clint is GREAT! He’s done a major project on my home and I couldn’t ask for a better experience with a general contractor . Our current project is converting a half bath to a full bath downstairs . And as I’ve stated everything has been great and it’s not complete but I’m that pleased with the way things have come along to write a review . Communication is very important in things like these and he is nothing short of amazing with his communication and professionalism ! If there was ever a doubt on who to select for your next project , don’t doubt . Reach out to Greater Charlotte Contracting !

Had a great experience working with Clint and Greater Charlotte Contracting. He did great work in a reasonable amount of time and for a reasonable price. I have had a few home projects I’ve needed to complete within the last few months and he has not only provided me great service with these projects, but also has had great referrals for work outside of his scope of business. I would highly recommend anyone looking for work to be done in the Charlotte area to work with Greater Charlotte Contracting.

Frequently asked questions

How do I start a bathroom remodel without wasting money on the wrong things?
Start with a real walk-through, not a phone quote. The condition of the subfloor, the location of existing drain lines, and the state of the waterproofing behind your current tile all affect what the project actually costs. Get those looked at first. Clint inspects before he scopes, so the estimate reflects the job as it is, not as it looks from the surface.
What's the difference between a tub replacement and a full bathroom remodel?
A tub replacement is a defined scope: demo the old tub and surround, prep the substrate, install the new unit and tile or surround panels. A full bathroom remodel can include all of that plus vanity work, flooring, drywall, fixture replacement, and layout changes. The two jobs have different timelines and different price points. Knowing which one you actually need saves you from paying for scope you don't want.
Why does tile work in a shower fail after a few years?
Almost always, it's the backing. Drywall behind shower tile absorbs moisture and softens over time, which cracks grout joints and lets water into the wall cavity. Cement board or a waterproof backer panel is the correct substrate. If a previous contractor used standard drywall behind your tile, that's a rebuild, not a regrout. Clint checks the substrate before any new tile goes on.
Can a half bath be converted to a full bath in an existing house?
Yes, but it's a real project. You need enough space for a shower or tub, and the drain line has to be in the right position or moved. Moving drain lines means opening the floor. It's not a quick job, and anyone quoting it without looking at the space first isn't giving you an accurate number. Liz Zimmerman had this done by Clint and reviewed the process as it went, calling out the communication as exceptional throughout.
How long does a bathroom remodel typically take?
A straightforward tub replacement with new surround tile can take a few days. A full bathroom remodel with layout changes, new flooring, vanity, and tile work runs longer, often one to two weeks depending on the scope and whether any surprises turn up behind the walls. Clint gives you a timeline before work starts and sticks to it. Andy Malenke's kitchen review noted the job was completed on time with the initial quote staying accurate, and that's the standard Clint holds across all projects.
Do I need a permit for a bathroom remodel in North Carolina?
Cosmetic work like replacing fixtures, tile, and vanities typically doesn't require a permit. Projects that involve moving walls, relocating plumbing, or changing the electrical layout usually do. Permit requirements vary by scope and jurisdiction. Clint will flag what's required for your specific project during the walk-through so nothing gets missed.
